Currently, almost every running shoe company has products in development supporting natural running, and we are beginning to see the very first steps by many of them away from heavy cushioning and elevated heels. Again though, most of these new shoes are being made solely for adults. Outside of a few select brands, with Terra Plana Vivo Kids being the model (see the photo of the TP Pally to the left), a void exists in the development of proper youth footwear, where natural foot function and development are perhaps most critical. Bunions. Many people think that you get bunions from wearing ill-fitting shoes (which certainly does not help!), but bunions are actually a genetic deformity. A bunion forms when the bone or tissue at the base of your toe becomes enlarged. Sometimes the bone of the big toe angles towards the little toe (a deformity known as hallux valgus). In either case, bunions can lead to significant pain as well as difficulty walking. Use of over the counter items such as a toe spacer and bunion sleeve can be used for symptomatic treatment. However, these devices will not affect the size of the bunion or prevent progression or the deformity. If you are a resident of New York City (NYC) and considering a bunion surgery, you indeed have a potentially stressful decision to make. It is important that you, as a patient considering surgery, make the right decision. By asking the right questions you should be able to find a well qualified bunion surgeon in NYV who can help you, correct the bunion, relieve your pain, and get you back to all the activities that help you enjoy life on your feet. A wide range of surgical procedures is performed based on the angular relationships of bone and extent of arthritis. All procedures involve removing the boney bump from the great toe. Procedures differ on how to realign the bone behind the bunion and recovery time eliminating foot pain. You can soak you foot in lukewarm water with Epsom salts mixed in it. The salts will help to ease the pain and reduce further inflammation. If you don't have Epsom salts in the home, then plain warm water may be used instead to notice good results. When determining the type of procedure to be performed it is important to determine if the patient is having just bump pain, or just joint pain, or both as that will come into play in the decision process as to the type of procedure to be performed. Next, the surgeon will look at the various angles that are formed between the bones of the foot on x-ray. The accepted practice is to measure these bunion angles which will help determine the type of procedure to be performed. There are easily a few dozen different procedures (and their variations) out there to repair bunions. Our findings indicate that hallux valgus is a significant and disabling musculoskeletal condition that affects overall quality of life," says Hylton Menz, an associate professor at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, in a news release. "Interventions to correct or slow the progression of the deformity offer patients beneficial outcomes beyond merely localized pain relief." Who Gets Bunions? Part of the survey included pictures of the left and right feet where the base of the big toe was progressively more deformed. Participants were asked to look at their own feet and pick the pictures that most closely resembled them. That helped researchers determine the severity of each person’s problem. Buying new shoes is always fun. Remember as a child you were bought new shoes and just had to leave the store wearing them? As it is impossible to avoid any inherited foot problems, care should be taken not to promote any condition which may be likely to occur later. It is extremely important to learn how to care for your feet at a young age. Therefore, you should teach your children the importance of wearing shoes which are stylish as well as comfortable. Since the latest fashion trends will sometimes see them wearing shoes which may cause damage, correct sizing by a professional is very important. Bunions ( Hallux Valgus ) are one of the most common causes of foot pain. It is characterized by a large, hard protrusion at the base of the big toe. It can become swollen and feverish. This is a condition that is usually caused by wearing shoes with pointed or narrowing toes. The bump is, in fact, a bone sticking out and turning toward the inside of the foot. The big toe often is found resting under or on top of the second toe which is called overlapping toes. The bunion or hallux valgus forms at the 1st metatarsal and proximal phalangeal joint. What Are The Causes Of Bunion Formation? WEEKS POST SURGERY - December 30th 2009 - Ah, the fateful day it was decided that my left foot needed a revision. This is also the same day that they discovered the pin had poked out through MY FLESH. (It didn't hurt at all though, isn't that nice?) I was in an exponentially better mood because the dreaded dressings were coming off, (oh, freedom to scratch carefully!) I could peel off that dead skin and rub in some good ol' fashioned vaseline along with the antibiotic for my poor, dried up feet, and I was still on a Boxing Day high.
